Microsoft has sent out invitations to members of the tech press asking them to attend an event in Barcelona on February 29th. Once things have wrapped up, Microsoft servers will once again be put to the test as millions of eager testers begin feverishly downloading the latest Windows 8 .iso files.
There will be a few noteworthy omissions from the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. Those of you who planned on firing up the test build on a home theater computer may be less than thrilled to learn that it won’t come with Windows Media Center. Microsoft had previously stated that WMC would be reserved for “premium Windows 8 SKUs,” so you’ll have to rely on third-party software during the preview period.
It also looks like the Start Button may have sailed off into the sunset, as leaked screenshots from the Preview show that the bottom left corner is completely orbless. Whether that’s specific to tablet installs, the ARM build, or the result of a user toggle remains to be seen — we’ll have to wait for our Preview installs to finish before we know for sure. Unless, of course, Microsoft blogs about it sooner.
While a few key bits will be missing, there will be some free apps on board.
